Hollow Deceiver

When it comes to pike flies I have to admit I like synthetic flies more than naturals. But that’s mainly because the synthetics simply last longer. There’s no denying that natural flies have much better movement in the water and flies like this Hollow Deceiver can be made as light to cast as synthetics. So as the first Pike fly on the blog we’ll feature the Hollow Deceiver because it’s probably the best natural pike fly there is.

The construction of this fly is very important to make it function properly. There are few different versions how to do it but here’s a short description of how I tie them.

First tie in a bunch of white Bucktail around the hook shank. This will keep the tail separated and add movement to the fly. Then tie in the hackle feathers for the tail and add Lateral Scale to the sides. Tie another bunch of Bucktail but this time with the tips facing forward. Fold the hair backwards and build up thread foundation in front of them. This will keep the hair from clinging together and give the fly much more volume and movement with the minimum amount of material. Add flash to you liking. Move a bit forward on the shank and tie another folded bucktail bunch. Repeat until you have 4-5 bunches and have reached the eye of the hook.

Each bunch should be shorter than the previous to get a bit of taper. I coat the tying point with Bug Bond after each step to make the fly more durable.

I added also two photos from yesterday that we spent at the sea. The biggest pike were 6 and 5 kg and both were caught with the very fly that’s at the bottom of the first photo. In total i caught seven pikes with that fly and one smaller pike destroyed it pretty badly. So in a worst case scenario it takes only one fish to trash your fly but on the other hand it can also be very durable and usually the big ones don’t do as much damage to the flies as their smaller friends.
