Alive Shrimp
Jesper Petersen’s shrimp pattern for Danish Sea Trout fishing. I had the privilege to tie this fly with Jesper this spring and was really taken with the thought he had put in to it. The fly is designed to swim and sink in the correct position and as the name suggests move elegantly even when it is slowly sinking towards the bottom. This is achieved by using sparse and thin materials that also give the fly it’s translucent appearance. The hook is bent to shape and little weight is added below the hookshank to the back of the fly only.
The heavier bodyhackle gives the fly bigger profile and prevents the speyhackle from tangling with the hook. The fly is symmetrical and actually there’s more materials on top of the shank because the lower fibers of speyhackle are stripped shorter. This again helps to keep the fly from swimming upside down which is a problem with many shrimps that have a thick back and hackle only underneath the fly.
