Fly Tying Event in Denmark
I was very happy when I was invited to be one of the 9 teachers in 2012 Fly Tying Event in Denmark. The organizer, Fly Fishing Federation Denmark, is a very big group of fishermen and they have plenty of experience in organizing events like these. They host the Danish Fly Festival once in two years and the profits go to fishing trips and workshops like this one.
The event was held in Kerteminde on the island of Fyn last weekend from Friday evening to Sunday. This year they had divided the workshop to two sections: Salmon & Sea Trout flies and trout flies. I was at the Salmon & Sea Trout flies teaching some classic Finnish patterns like Sarvijaakko and Kalkkisten Vaalea. Other teachers on this side were Mikael Lindström, Jesper Petersen and Olli Ojamo.
The level of tyers was good and it was great to get in to little details of tying and I’m sure everyone learned something new at the event. I took turns with Olli when teaching our group and was able to wander around when Olli was tying his Eumer tubes. I was thrilled to see Micke Lindström in action with his zonker tubes and learned quite a lot of new things about tying Danish Sea Trout flies from Jesper Petersen. Troutfly section also had some great talent including Fabio Federighi and Gianluca Nocentini from Italy and Martin Rudin from Sweden. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to spend so much time on this side but it was nice to see old friends from Italy and plenty of new ones from this side as well. Actually I got pretty excited about trout fishing again after a long while. It’s too bad we don’t have so good Mayfly hatches here in Finland. Have to start planning a trip to somewhere in Europe for next year for some proper dry fly fishing.
Big thanks to Bo, Henrik and Steen for hosting the event and also to the tyers who tied some mean flies even though some of the patterns like Kalkkisten Vaalea were pretty challenging. I will post some photos of flies later when I get a chance to photograph again but you can look through some photos of the event above.
