Pro Golden Stonefly Nymph
This spring I got some samples of Pro Sprotfishers trout fly tying materials and did some testing with them while planning the trip to US in the prime stonefly season. I’m sorry for the generic name but I hate naming my patterns especially ones I haven’t fished for years and gone through many development stages.
My favorite of the materials was the Two Toned Rib which I think is a super product. I’m not a big fan of ready made insect parts so I’m probably not the target audience for most of their products but I understand perfectly the market for them. This fly for example takes no more time to tie than most of my simpler nymphs and the result is pretty realistic. And they are getting better and better in making these type of materials, these actually look pretty nice and realistic and don’t scream out immediately “printed plastic”.
The fly also worked pretty well this summer whenever I fished it, caught some trout with it in Finnmark too where there’s no Golden Stones but there are other quite large Stonefly species in smaller quantities.
