The Caddis Fly – Halesus Tesselatus

This is an important fly for me. It’s my favorite of all the realistics I have ever tied. It was done for the World Tuscany Open fly tying competition in Italy and won the competition. After good results in the competition I was asked to go tying to the Umbria Fly Fishing Festival and had a blast at my first international tying event.

I like the fact that the fly uses only few materials that are readily available for most tyers. So there’s no fancy tricks, just good manipulation of basic materials.

Hook: #16 short shanked

Body: Raffia/Swiss Straw

Wings: Medallion Sheeting

Veins: Hackle Stems

Legs: Hackle Stems

Eyes: Melted monofilament

Antennaes: Hackle Stems

I really like your pattern, I have never heard of Medallion Sheeting though – what is it and where can it be sourced? Does it come in a pre-prepared wing, or do you need to manufacture the veins in the wings?
    Cheers,

Hi Rob, Sorry for my late reply. Medallion sheeting is distributed by Hareline so it should be available at most fly shops. The veins are formed between two sheets of medallion sheeting from stripped hackles so it’s not a good solution for fishing flies but medallion sheeting by itself works great for fishing flies.
